Park + Market Groundbreaking

Park & Market, the 562,000-square-foot mixed-use development in San Diego’s East Village neighborhood, broke ground on the project in a public ceremony.  The $275 million development combines residential, office, retail and a University of California-San Diego campus extension, at a site just five blocks from Petco Park baseball stadium.

The design for the Park + Market development integrates a vibrant mix of public and private uses, including a 34-story residential tower, destination retail venues at street-level, restaurant space, 66,000 square feet designated for UC San Diego, and below-grade parking for 560 cars. The project also includes work to preserve the historic Remmen Building located on the site, as well as a themed public plaza celebrating the neighborhood and its history.

Particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of the Innovative Cultural and Education Hub, the satellite campus of UC San Diego, which partnered in developing the project. Adding to the value of the development for the community, 85 of the 426 residential units in the high-rise tower will be earmarked for affordable housing.

“The Park + Market development is a bold and exciting advance for San Diego’s growth and urban transit-oriented mixed use,” says Michael Johnson, AIA, NCARB, design principal and partner at Carrier Johnson + CULTURE. “The combination of scales and uses will help ensure the development serves as a vibrant mixed-use community, while also bringing a major institution of learning to San Diego’s downtown.”
