San Diego’s downtown civic core is evolving to celebrate new employment hubs, sustainable urban spaces and walkable neighborhoods that create a healthy place to live, work and play. Carrier Johnson + CULTURE and Foulger Pratt are collaborating to promote this lifestyle in the form of a residential, cultural and social hub located in Makers Quarter. Block F is sited as a bookend to the Art Center and the New School of Architecture & Design, the East Village Green situated between them, offering residential units, commercial and retail components with an extension of the park setting into a public pocket park in addition to 12,600 SF of private rooftop gardens.

The public park is anchored by the industrial Makers’ style at the ground level, serving as the building’s entrance. Overlooking the East Village Green, the park incorporates storm water management practices in the form of seasonal rain gardens that mitigate rooftop runoff. Interacting with the streetscape, a corner café serving both street-side and park-side patrons, encloses the space as a smaller scale extension of the adjacent park. Unifying both structure and greenscape, large scale art elements are integrated throughout the 32 level development, showcasing the local artist culture and embracing the Makers’ feel of the Quarter.
