Campus Pointe

Vision

Shortly after Alexandria Real Estate purchased the Campus Pointe site, they sought to renovate and expand its capacity to house more science and technology-focused tenants. The only existing facility, conveniently located near UCSD’s La Jolla Campus and Torrey Pines, was a two-story, 464,000 GSF building situated on 41.67 acres and housed pharmaceutical and electronic corporations including Celgene, Eli Lilly, Covance, and Kyocera. Our goal was to craft a long-term plan that allows for the expansion of the existing facility and introduction of new ones over the course of multiple years.

Our Master Plan lead directly to the first built project – renovation and expansion of the 197,928 SF office building at the center of Campus Pointe. Transparency was a driving factor in our design. Semi-transparent building facades and surfaces create a strong relationship between the interior environments – composed of sterile rooms and synthetic materials of the labs and offices – and outdoor environments – where nature flourishes. This slight opacity also encourages views inward, sparking curiosity about the innovative processes taking place inside. The blue and green tint of façade panels reflect the expansive sky and lush greenery. There are moments at which the building meets the ground in a smooth, precast concrete base which also serves as seating, railings, and planters around the site.
